Early Saturday morning last week I'm crusing into town in my 2004 9-5 Aero wagon on the interstate. Very little traffic and all moving at the posted speed limit. As I approached a major intersection/highway transition I noticed a lady in a smaller SUV in the right lane behind another car. Apparently that car wasn't going fast enough so she changes lanes behind me in the middle lane. Apparently I wasn't going fast enough either so she pulls around me in the fast lane, passes then proceeds to cut back across two lanes to exit to the right to the highway transition. As she crosses my lane (again) she is far enough ahead that I notice a long chunk of tire tread, most likely from a retreaded 18-wheeler, lying in my lane and she is driving over it. I figure, no sweat her vehicle is large enough to pass over it and so is my Saab. Well, she manages to hit the tire tread and it bounces up in the air, hits the front of my car and sails up and over the top just past the windscreen. I look in the rear view mirror and see it hit the road behind me with a round piece of chrome.
Damage was minimal. I lost the chrome around the grill on the drivers side of the main grill and there is a small dent in the front of the hood. Luckily it didn't take off the sharkfin antenna on the roof - maybe the rails help deflect. I figured, great, that's about a C-note for a replacement part. To my surprise, I ordered a replacement at Europarts for $28 and it pops right in. Now my wagon doesn't look like it's eye was poked out.
It's a jungle out there. Drive safe and have a great day.
