I used the 0W/40 grade of Mobil-1 in my car shortly after this blend was introduced (or maybe after it was re-labeled "Euro Blend") more than 100,000 miles ago. The only time I have ever had an oil consumption problem with my engine was during the 10,00 to 15,000 miles I used 0W/40. Admittedly, this was during the midst of the PCV saga and the problem may have been caused by one of the interim PCV system variants, but the problem disappeared after changing to 5W/40 weight even though ver6 of the PCV quest hadn't arrived yet.
I have read some posts, either on Saab owner boards or BobIsTheOilGuy, that identify 0W/40 as barely qualifying as a 40wt oil based on viscosity, and that it shears to a 30wt oil fairly quickly during use. Some of the BITOG posts are written by lubrication experts, many are written by folks like me with limited personal experience, and some are writen by raving lunatics (particularly anything regarding Castrol oils blended in Germany).
Mobil-1 0W/40 has the right approvals for use in our Saabs. I tried it, had oil consumption issues, and decided against it. If it works for you, great.
