I still haven't yet had a chance to dig into trying to self diagnose what is wrong with my motor now.. but it is next on project list..

99 9-5 se 2.3 auto.. 174K... here is the series of events and steps I've taken so far to keep running..

Blew a hose last fall and overheated badly. got it home, replaced upper hose and thermostat and found large quarter size worn out/rot hole in lower intercooler hose to intake, found that air sucking sound I was hearing.. replaced intercooler hose.. coolant.. back on road. running better than before..

Few weeksd later noticed was using coolant, SID is toast but now could understand garbled warning add coolant same warning came up before blown hose but could not make it out and saab newbie though another light was burnt warning..

thought was bypass valve, or water pump maybe.. no fluid noticed leaking anywhere outside engine, kept eye on coolant and still running great.. couple more weeks after filling coolant here and there to keep level up look back after real cold am start up on way to work.. looked like steam train smoke.. just about to pull over, no smoke.. no coolant warning no overheat gage... keep on driving to work.. (stupid) runs fine remaining 30 min.. also OK on way home.. next day same steam show at start up.. finally see coolant spraying out of #4 cylinder.. read up here, blown gasket/loose bolts. feared the worse.. opened up and #4 front bolt finger tight, others very loose easy to untighten.. middle of winter, need car try and do cheap attempt to keep running.. new head bolts, one at a time, torque, new VC gasket.. looked varnishy brown, but no sludge ,very happy about h]that..add Baars stop leak.. at same time did complete all hoses PCV #6 update.. start up.. no smoke, no leak, no coolant loss.. perhaps about 6 months on repair, things are fine, no coolant loss, runs great..

miscellaneous other repairs non motor related here and there to try and fix common repairs, fun spare time stuff..

early spring, normal commute come to stop light, tranny locks up like gears dropped.. NO warning, fluids good.. toasted tranny.. install used tranny ouch .. back on road..

perhaps coincidence, but see oil drips on driveway after tranny job wife driving now in town stop and go for several weeks.. I let go too log between M1 oil change, about 7K miles.. oil light comes on.. about 2 qts low, ouch add oil, never used this much oil, thought leak was worse than driveway spots.. next day oil light on flickering occassionally but level is OK.. then no light for next few days.. wife driving in town short trips.. comes home says smoking badly.. yep. tailpipe and dipstick smoke.. no clue.. thought was noisy at first, but now think was loose engine cover rattle and engine sound normal..

seems to still run OK idling other than smoke..

plugs look nice, all the same brown..

pipe where connects to TB felt dry inside at TB, but oil around TB flange.. look into TB and oil pooled in small cavities.. but sides butterfly have no oil residue? never noticed any blue start up smoke?
crawl under, oil seepage seems to be at base of turbo?? could it be??

Not exactly sure how to determine for certain blown turbo? could that cause smoke from dipstick/crankcase?

is 174 K miles worth diagnosing for hopeful repair?

if so are these following steps proper to take to determine if worth it??:

compression test if OK; verify turbo situation, regardless of that; drop pan, sludge check, screen clean, plastiguage bearings, if no sludge and bearings OK; proceed with check/replace oil pump?; something about replace chain balancer?; then if all is well underneath, start up top; head gasket replace; if needed turbo replace (TD04??); hopeful start up and run good then maybe engine flush?? then pray?
