On 4 9-5's I have not had a broken spring yet - and I hope not to, but I have installed rear spacers 4 times.
On the other hand I had both original front springs break on a '91 Honda Accord wagon we owned from new - I missed the TSB warranty window by mileage, and had to pay, but the new springs were clearly redesigned and required a 90-degree rotation from previous on the strut / knuckle mount.
Currently I have an '05 BMW 325xi which is either on rear springs #6 & #7 or #7 & #8 - I can't say whether the original owner got 3 rear springs or 4 rear springs under warranty and 'good will'. I replaced both sides when I got the car, though only one of the two was broken. These I suspect have not been redesigned, BUT the plastic coating may have been. I now have 75K on the ones I put in - better miles than any previous on this car. I think the failure mode for these is scratched coating from salt & sand with poor trailing arm drainage. Then crevice corrosion creates a weak spot. I drive a lot more miles per year than the original owner, and I clean the sand & gravel out.
