Jae, I think only certain failures cause burnt expoxy smell from cooking ignition coil. Probably when one of the four triacs in the firing circuit dies in a closed circuit mode supplying full power to an ignition coil. But upstream in the DI circuitry lies a power supply and oscillator circuit to produce the 400V current. Just a whole lot of potential failure points.

Should any readers experience DI death and smell burnt expoxy, I'd advise them to limit key in ignition on time, or remove the DI fuse for tow in to dealer. As I mentioned in a previous post, I smelt the burnt expoxy and saw the oil breakdown from the ignition coil. But the tow operator must have left my key in the on position, and as a result fried the entire wiring harness to the DI. As my dealer did not stock the harness assembly, I had to wait 2 days to get the car back, and IMO it is never good to have this level of current drain through a critical system of the auto and have to replace this wiring. Fortunately there have been no other resultant problems from this incident.
