I've discussed this with companies who develop car care products and the consensus is that dashboards no longer need a protectant. The material used on dashboards is quite a bit different than other parts of your interior. Automakers have learned to produce a dashboard that will not crack or fade over many many years.

What I've been told is that its fine to use a *water based* protectant on other parts of my interior but don't use anything on the dash except maybe a mild cleaner once or twice a year to remove light dirt. Otherwise use a damp towel (microfiber works best) to remove dust, fingerprints, etc.
