Dealer not sure how to handle CE light....cluless

I brought my 2000 Aero to the dealer for a check engine light. Dealer looks and sees two codes. One for the DI cassette going bad and the other has to do with an emissions leak of some sort. Dealer calls and says it can be something as simple as a loose or leaky gas cap or something much more in depth for which they can’t guarantee if they’ll be able to find, let alone fix. I have never heard of a dealer saying we might not be able to find the cause of the check engine light so the 3-5 hours or labor (smoke tests, etc.) may result in a lot of nothing. What kind of support is this from Saab? Does this sound as strange as I think it does? I told him not to worry about it planning to bring it to a local Saab specialist but now I have a constant CE light therefore masking any other problems that may arise. Car is under an aftermarket warranty that already refused the DI.
