Strange clutch operation

I have a 2001 Aero manual and a very strange thing occured with my clutch, yesterday. I was trying to find a parking space in a multistorey garage at a BART station in the SF Bay Area. After going up and down six stories, mostly in first gear, I found a parking space and parked. When I returned, I noticed that my clutch pedal was located almost on the floor/firewall, with only an inch of play. I was able to disengage the clutch by depressing it, and engage it within about 1/2 inch of travel, although it was a very quick engagement. I drove out, thinking that I would get it home and look at it but, on a whim, I reached down and pulled upward on the pedal when I was at a stop sign, leaving the lot. The pedal came up quite easily and the clutch began to function normally. In fact, the clutch seems to function better than before, with engagement at the right spot, positive grab, etc. I have tried to recreate the situation by stepping hard on the clutch and riding around the neighborhood in first gear, etc., but everything appears to be fine. I checked the fluid and that's in good shape, as well.

The car just went past the four years from its in-service date, but there is 48,500 on the odo. I would take it into the dealer, but I suspect that they will simply say "it looks fine, to us" from my past experience, there. I would suspect a "catch" in the return spring or the floor mat getting in the way but, if that was the reason, the clutch would not have engaged at that low level.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what the issue may be?
