I faced kind of the same problem with my 87 SPG except due to being rearended, my car is probably in worse shape then your convert.

Anyways, like others have stated, it might be a good idea to start over. You could keep your 87 as a bad weather car & get a newer one for those nice summer days :o)

I priced paintjobs for my SPG & almost NO shops would consider the car. They all want cars which have been in fender benders & not vehicles which take up their service bay for extended periods of time. So I found a 88 SPG & am going to do all the work to that. It's a lot cheaper then the $8,000-$10,000 estimates I was getting for paint work (+ parts) & that doesn't include engine work, trans, etc.

Like others have stated, look into simply buying a sub 100K mile car. A lot less headaches & a better car (better brakes, trans, etc).
