Installing the stereo in the DIN opening above the cubby holy is a great way to go. I have done it on my last 2 Saabs. It puts the radio out of sight as you said, and allowed me to put gauges in the top opening, which look great, too! Plus, the radio controls seem to be much more easily accessible that way (also puts the face at a nice little upward angle for loading a CD)

A detachable face is also a great deterrent from theft. They are so cheap now, anyway, that it is silly not to get one.

The wiring is very easy to do. If you still have the old harness in place, I recommend consulting your audio equipment guide which should have come with the car (if you still have it) It will give you the correct wiring diagram for hooking up the aftermarket pieces. Basically, choose the largest of the three black wires for your ground, the red wire for your switched power lead, and the yellow for the battery power lead. These can be tested using a voltmeter, sticking the positive cable into the pin slots. The speaker wires (stock) don't make much sense. I think the fronts are solid colors, and red goes with blue, and green goes with brown. I can't remember which is positive in the gr/br combo. The rear speakers are striped wires with the same color coordination. The antenna lead is solid green, I think. It really helps if you have the audio guide to tell you all of this more formally!

An alarm, while noisy, doesn't do all that much. People don't really pay attention to them any more. Saabs had a nice optional Alpine alarm, that might plug right into your car with a little wiring. It depends what year 900 you have. It was called Saab Guard.
