1. Welcome to SAABs!
2. Do you have an owner's manual? There is a diagram of the air distribution switch (the one w/ the arrows) in it and will tell ya what they're for. It's OK, it seems to confuse every new comer, but after you "get it" it makes perfect sense and you'll wonder why it was ever confusing!
3. From memory (starting at top, and going counter-clockwise):
>Windshield defrost (funny defrost symbol)
>Windshield defrost + dash/floor heat (small up/down arrow)
>dash/floor heat only (down arrow)
>dash/florr heat + center "fresh air" vent (it's the down arrow w/ the extra chunk on it)
>dash outside air or A/C air if on (little sideways arrow)
>max dash outside air or A/C air if on (big sideways arrow)
>off (zero)

'85 900S 178k
The cabin fan switch (small one to the left of the heat control switch) controls all of the above except for "max dash outside air", which is full blast already.

If I missed one, sorry.
