Volvo owner thinking about "converting"

I have an '85 Volvo 240 turbo. It has been an excellent car, but it has done over 250K and the cost of repairing it far exceeds its value. I have thoroughly enjoyed the 16 years that we have spent together, but unfortunately it's time to look for something new.

I have always liked the classic lines of 900. My neighbor owns a red 900T with all the amenities and it is a damn fine car. I'm really very much in the dark about this model though. Could someone please educate me in regard to horsepower, safety, options, best year, etc.? I love the Volvo because it is a very solid car and gives me a tremendous sense of safety & confidence. I don't know how much of this is psychological, but it is definitely a very substantial car for its size and weight.

I'm also concerned about reliability and longevity. Volvo guys like to tell horror stories about SAAB's. Jokes abound in my local Volvo garage, e.g. SAAB stands for "Swedish Automobile Assembled Backwards." I guess that it's naive to come here expecting a totally unbiased opinion, but are the maintenance requirements of the 900 series really that bad?

I like to do my own work when possible. How difficult are routine jobs on the 900, e.g. timing belt? How expensive are parts? I've used iPd out of Portland, Oregon for most of my Volvo parts needs. Is there an aftermarket source like iPd for SAAB parts?

Looking forward to input.
