It's a device attached to the other end of that dash thingie that goes from hot to cold. It is plumbed between two hoses leading to and from the engine.

It cannot in and of itself make you engine run hot if the engine/cooling system is otherwise in good shape, i.e., if the valve is closed the engine shouldn't run hot. OTOH, if it is sucking air through the valve (extremely unlikely since cooling system SHOULD be pressurized...you're more likely to get coolant on your feeties!) conceivably it could cause problems. At that point, you would notice air when bleeding the cooling system as well as no pressure in the system.

More than likely there are several things at work...either your radiator is shot (not unlikely if it's OEM 88....I went through three radiators in 6 years on my 84 900T in 190K miles...really sucked, the 87 is on only it's second radiator in 240K so something must have improved....) or your thermoswitch isn't turning on or your fan timer relay is shot (most likely...they fail open and the thermoswitch can't turn them on). Even a/c condensers have been known to clog up with leaves, road debris, or whatever. The radiator itself may also be clogged or the little metal heat transfer coils between the actual coolant passages may have rotted out or deteriorated due to road chemicals, whatever (same as bad radiator).
You could also have a bad coolant expansion tank cap which stops the system from pressurizing and will generally cause overheat (you can go to Evans coolant at $20 a gallon, no mixing!, and go atmospheric w/o pressurization, but this is way beyond) so start with that.

Are your fans running while this is going on? Have you changed out the thermostat in the last two years? Have you flushed the coolant in the last two years?

A good place to start is the http://www.townsendimports.com sit and check the tech docs for engine cooling.

Have at it!!
