JohnK, I appreciate your suggestions on the matter. Part of me knows you're right. :-(

Unfortunately, I need this car to get to/from work every day, and it's not just a hobby project. I don't trust my mechanical aptitude at doing this repair, particularly as I have no lift, and no experience taking apart suspension systems...and I'm not eager to pay somebody half a grand to do it. Put those things together and I am willing to spend some more time trying for simple solutions.

Chrisx says the repair isn't "difficult", but rather dirty. If this is a consensus, then I'm ready to go. I don't care how greasy I get. I also see it as an opportunity to learn and improve my mechanical skills. However, I do care about the quality of installation of my steering system, since it's pretty important. Other folks around here who did it themselves said it was bad enough that they wish they'd paid someone else to do it. On this DIY board, that's a pretty big statement. JohnK, you say 3-4 hours? For what level of experience, with what tools?

This car is killing me right now... leaky gaskets, leaky rack, maybe a bad radiator, dodgy shifting, clutch noise, not to mention the questionable tranny its had from the beginning that I've all but forgotten about amidst current concerns. I can't afford to swap out every part for a new one, even though I wish I could. I'd like to kill the lousy "Saab specialist" I took it to for a pre-sale inspection, who didn't mention any of this. At least I wish his rec. didn't show up on Saabnet so others wouldn't make my mistake (Jack's INComplete Car Care). But alas, I can only try to improve my car to the best of my ability. Right now I'd rather dump a bit of P/S fluid into the reservoir every day and hope for the best. When the case of Valvoline runs out, and I've exhausted the other simple solutions, I guess reality will bite me in the tail.

Thanks again everybody for your input. Without this board, I may have already lost faith in the ol' girl.
