I wouldn't suggest a C900 auto. Too iffy (most all of these cars have 80kmi+ on them by now) if the knee is a temporary thing, (6-9mo) and he needs to get something to drive for a while that he can sell quickly and easily (this assumes he wants a 5 sp when his knee is better). My suggestion with these assumptions is to get a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. These are easy to find in good shape and they seem to require little to no maintenance (compared to a Saab). After this and riding in your C900, he will surely want to get a 5 sp himself when his knee gets better. If the knee looks to be a permanent thing (sorry to hear about that!), get a 9k auto or if the budget allows a 9_5 auto. The 9k auto is short lived, too (especially in a turbo) Steer clear of the NG900/9_3 it is eye candy with little Saabness. (Friends don't let friends drive NG's) I know this is sacrilege, but the 90's Volvo 940T auto is a pretty nice car too. it is a 4 sp and shifts nicely and seems to have a fairly long life. $0.02 YMMV
