A weird dies-after-start problem...

Hi -- I've just purchased a 1989 900S with 131k. It has an interesting problem which is a little perturbing, but not really serious. Occasionally, when I go out and start the car with the engine cold (when I've not driven the car for a number of hours), the car will start and die after 2-3 seconds (after the initial rev from starting dies). It starts quickly, but when this happens, advancing the gas pedal doesn't help. After this first time, I start the car again and it works just fine. Otherwise, the car runs perfectly.

As I said, this only has happened very infrequently and the only thing I can come up with is that perhaps the battery is either dying or being run down. I have a stereo system with a subwoofer and so the first few days I had the car, I played around with the cd player a lot in my driveway. Could this drain a weak battery enough to cause this (or, perhaps the bigger question is, could a dead battery cause this?). It does *start* quickly, usually in 2-3 turns, so that is why I'm not very convinced its the battery.
