Greetings

This is another long and drawn out saga with my 84 Turbo (B201 H type, Bosch "CIS" K Jetronic fuel injection, electronic ignition system with Hall transmitter, Bosch MEC 717 coil, leaded fuel etc). I am very very lost, and so I turn to the collective genius of the Saabnet BB to rescue me from frustration, immobility and a touch of embarrassment.

The problem surfaced as a "cold start" problem - reluctant to start; would not idle, ran very rough and stalled easily until warm, and progressively longer to warm up. Once warm/hot things were as normal – power/torque, smooth, would rev easily to the redline etc; all things we expect.

So it was out with the s/plugs – no damage, correct gap, but a little bit of "soot" which was easily cleaned; and off with the distributor cap – no damage, clean. The leads are all only 2 years old and have not been damaged and fit well.

Expecting to be on my way, I was disappointed/perplexed/amazed/paranoid when it would not start at all, not even the faintest hint of ignition, lots of turning but nothing else.

Next was the "cold start" mechanisms – 1st the warm up regulator; voltage OK, no damage to hoses or wires: 2nd the cold start valve; squirts fuel in a nice broad spray. I also examined the thermo-time switch (cleaned sensor and checked connections; all OK) and auxiliary air valve (does not open completely – but that's not going to stop ignition).

Happy that there was fuel I started looking at the spark side. No spark, not at the s/plug and not when connecting a s/plug direct to the coil.

The coil is a Bosch MEC 717 "coil for electronic ignition 12 volt" that has been happily working for several years. When the ignition was switched on, there is an initial 10 volts, which then dropped to nothing as expected. The resistance across the LT terminals 1 (negative) and 15 (positive) is approx. 0.01 Ohms and across the secondary windings (both 1 and HT; and 15 and HT) is approx. 8000 Ohms. These agree with a new coil.

The control module has approx. 10 v across terminal 4 (feeding the negative coil terminal) and terminal 2 (the earth). The wires between the distributor and control module terminals 3, 6 & 5 have no resistance.

When the distributor rotor is covering the Hall transmitter, there is 10 v and when one of the gaps is aligned with, the Hall transmitter there is 7 volts across control module terminals 3 (negative) and 6 when measured as the wires come out of the distributor. These are considerably higher than the 1.0 v or more and 0.4 v or less that, I was expecting. Is this part of the problem?

So, I have fuel, power to the coil and distributor but no spark, any clues? Any solutions?

Your thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated, thanks in advance

John
