I'm no saab mechanical expert and I don't know - This is potentially an expensive job if what that other mechanic said is true and you should take it to a saab specialist who will be able to identify the scope of the problem quickly and honestly tell you what to expect. There is simply no substitute for having a good mechanic who is familiar with your car looking it over, especially if you don't do alot of the work yourself. This is particularly true for problems you can't replicate. They will be able to give you a good idea after looking at it whether it's a sign of slow saab transmission death which eventually happens from what I've seen here or if it's a bigger problem. You probably know this. Anyway, in Manhattan your transmission will take a beating if you park on the street regularly. Remember to shift down to first always when you stop or are creeping along.

Plug time - From what I have found so far around NYC, it's worth driving out to see Jim Moncrief and Andy at Sobstory for a potential major job for the expertise, trust and the fair prices. Their shop has a nice vibe. Check out the quality of Jim's posts for an idea of how he runs his shop and the quality service and advice they offer. I like Roland in Brooklyn too for local service (718) 622-3838, but I would go to Sobstory for anything that's a potentially bigger job right now because they have more experience. Let us know what happens.
