Last time I did a 900 fuel filter, I jacked up the right rear (supported the car on jack stands) and removed the tire. I found this to be much better than lying under the car and having fuel fall on me.

To depressurize the fuel system - start the car, and pull the fuel pump fuse. When the engine quits, shut it off. To be even more sure, I depressurize the system, then wait an hour or three.

Fuel will come out, most of which is the fuel trapped in the fuel filter. I keep some rags around, and a containter that will hold a couple of cups. A little will leak out when you undo the first fitting - I then let the filter hang down and drain into the container. Always keep a fire extinquisher handy. But if you're careful, not a lot leaks out - you won't be taking a bath.

The real trick/hassle with the fuel filter is getting the fittings loose. They like to lock on tight. I recommend spraying them with pentrating oil before the tast. Actually, I recommend spraying them once or twice a day for a few days before you do the job. Get both fittings loose, then remove the clamp that holds the filter. Getting them loose is a pain, and every extra bit of leverage you can get helps.

I replace fuel filters about every 30K miles.
