86 900S Fuel pump problems

I picked up a 1986 Saab 900S a few weeks ago and am having some slight difficulties with it. It's a 2.0L 4Cyl. 16 Valve Fuel Injected. The fuel pump was not running and I replaced it. The replaced one is not running so I tested it by hooking it up directly to power and it does run. I tried replacing the fuel pump relay which is located under the kick panel on the passenger side near the ecu. There are 2 relays there 1 is fuel pump and I guess the other is the system relay? Anyway, I tried switching one at a time with a new one (since they are both the same) and still no go. I unhooked the fuel line and no fuel comes out. I also checked the fuse and that's good. I ended up(for now) running a direct line from the battery (with an inline fuse) to the pump and have a toggle switch to turn the pump on and off (and the cars does run this way). Does anyone have any other ideas as to what the problem may be? If I hook the fuel pump up the way it's supposed to be, it doesn't run. I don't want to keep running it the way I have rigged now and would much rather have it hooked up and running the way it should be. PLEASE! can someone help?
