Years ago Consumer Reports did a study of oil change frequency using New York City cabs. They used several different intervals from 3k miles (I think) to 50,000 miles. They dismantled the engines and there was no significant wear difference between groups. Their conclusion was to extend intervals to manufacturer's recommendation. They seemed to imply extending even beyond.

When I was in the Army, many years ago, we had a program in which the oil was analyzed periodically and the oil was changed only when metal filings were found or if antifreeze was positive (then we changed the head gasket too). Many of these vehicles had there oil changed after years of use.

If you notice, many of the manufacturers are extending the interval for oil changes. My VW diesel is at 10k. A Nissan 200 SER I had was 7.5k. Also I believe my wife's Dodge Caravan is at 7.5k too.

With that kind of driving I could easily recommend extending the interval for changing the oil to 7.5k or 10K. If your compression check is fine and there are no oil leaks, Dino oil should be fine. However, I have read on other websites that synthetic oil is good for high mileage vehicle because it is less likely to leak at old seal sites. I am skeptical at this because synthetic is felt to flow better and leaking gaskets on high mileage vehicles is bound to happen. And Mobile 1 synthetic is expensive. This is what I try to use in my VW diesel during the winter. I couldn't used this in all of my vehicles because it would break the bank. I had a Volvo 745T that I clicked over 200k using Havolin and Penzoil oil and I never had a problem with it (related to oil). If it was me I would extend beyond 3k. The engine has already proven itself with great engineering and judicious maintenance.
