I figure I'm the luckiest man on this bulletin board today. I was pulling out of my driveway and heard a metallic bang as I hit the shallow dip where the driveway meets the road. My car suddenly pulled to the right. Upon close inspection the drivers side lower control arm broke clean through about a quarter inch from where it mates to the rear most bushing. I figured if that had happened 5 minutes later while going 65mph on I64, I'd have been a goner.

Now, what was the likely failure mode? I couldn't get a completely clear view of the break, but from what I could see, there was some light rust over some of cracked portion. Not an entirely fresh break. Some additional background info. Two and a half weeks ago I picked up my Saab from my longtime mechanic after he installed a new 5 spd manual transmission in it. As part of the job, I had him replace the Inner Drive bearing on the passenger side and all four outer and inner CV/Drive boots. I haven't had the car up on jacks since then, and I don't recall having hit anything of any consequence. Could such a crack have existed prior to my mechanic having worked on it and escaped his notice? Could he have inappropriately placed the lift or jack between the bushing and the Spring exerting undue stress and strain on the lower arm?

The tow truck driver has dropped my car off at his place for him to address the problem, and I'm trying to decide what position I should take with my mechanic when I talk to him Monday morning. He's been great for me and my Saabs for over 6 years and has always been extremely helpful. This is going to be tough. Suggestions?
