My 89 900s is currently at a "local' auto repair shop here in Virginia.
They are diagnosing a charging problem (possibly alternator, battery cable problem, Voltage regulator, ect..) Preliminary reports are that it has been traced to a bad ignition lock relay unit. I struggled wit who to have look at this problem. I have been reading the recent posts daily. I was worried about taking it to a general auto repair shop, because of the experience and or in depth knowledge of working on Saabs. Although, this garage is very well respected and is always busy with all different types of cars, both domestic and imports. I thought about taking it do a specialty shop but was horrified at some of the quotes they gave for basic things. I think there one notch down from the Saab dealerships. I didn't even consider the dealerships. The local shop was much more convenient for me and gave me decent price quotes. My intentions were to have them do electrical system test using the "machine" to determine where the power problem is. I figured that is pretty basic, I wouldn’t think you need anyone special to do that. Sine I don't have the equipment, someone needed to do it. If the problem was something serious, I would need to consider a shop familiar with Saabs. IF not to bad, I would have to evaluate weather or not this shop should do some repair under $100. We will know soon.
If it turns out to be a bad alternator, should I have a local shop do it/
The mechanic said, by the looks of it won't be easy. (Labor, Labor$$$)
I'm hoping it's not. I already purchased the ignition relay, $50, which I have to eat if it's not the problem, no return on electrical parts.
