I finally had enough of the leaky steering rack on my 82T. Because I'm seriously considering buying and transplanting a rebuilt 16V engine into this car (also requiring all the exhaust and system components), I opted to keep the rack replacement cost down by replacing the bad rack with a good used one from the local self pick/pull yard. What's a good used one? One that doesn't leak! I found just such a rack from a scraped 86 16V. Just my luck the complete engine had been pulled, thus giving me near limitless access to the rack for the dismantling. Here's where the fun began.

Turns out the 19mm mounting nuts on the bottom needed a "deep" socket to clear the long bolt end. That I didn't have. That was a frustrating moment - considering I'd taken the afternoon off and driven the bad streets to pull a rack! I seriously considered postponing the pulling until tomorrow after I purchased the proper socket.

Then I remembered I had a long (15") box end wrench of just this size (3/4, but it matches 19mm) in the trunk of my car. That meant having to pack all my tools away and trudge the near 1/8 mile back to my car and retrieve that wrench. 10 minutes later and back at the donor car with the wrench... for leverage I opted to stand inside the engine compartment with my feet on the ground and press hard against the wrench with my thigh. As I pushed on the wrench I had a frightening moment when the entire car shifted on the rinky dink support posts the scrap yard uses to prop the cars up on. Without the heavy engine the car is far less secure propped up like that. I had a fleeting vision of the car slipping off and breaking my legs! Without leverage, I wouldn't be able to break those nuts free!

I needed a long pipe of some sort so I could slip the wrench into and twist off the nut from below (while not in danger of being crushed). That's the beauty of being in a scrap yard - there's always something laying about you can use for leverage. Bingo - I found an old fashioned car jack with the long hollow post, with a center hole large enough to fit the wrench into! Snap went those nuts, and $40 later I have a new used leakless rack!

Tomorrow - the removal of the old one and installation of the new. Besides being messy, I just know there's gonna be a mystery or two.
