I'm still gonna be kinda vague, since I haven't had this trouble yet...

The top of the shock is attached to the "frame" & visible in the wheel well when the wheel is off. There's big rubber grommets to prevent the actual shaft of the shock from touching the frame of the car. Those rubber mounts are supposed to be under some compression, they're not supposed to be loose & moving around.

Sometimes they rot or break or maybe the top nut gets loose, then the shock can rattle around a bit, making the noise. It's similar at the bottom, but I think the mounting bolt/nut is horizontal, with a rubber mount inside some kind of ring which is part of the bottom of the shock.

If you just raise the corner of the car, the shock is extended fully, & the spring is still pulling on the shock. Then the rubber mount is held in place & you 'think' its not loose. That's why you have to lift slightly on the axle just enough to move the shock absorber from its fully-extended position. Then grab the shock & try to shake it. If the rubber mounts are loose, it should be obvious.

Otherwise, each of the suspension components has some rubber mounts of some sort. They are all probably as old as the rest of the car, so they can rot or fall apart, too. Usually they are arranged so that if the rubber rots, the axle can't actually fall out of the car.

If its not the shock, try this... Put the car back down on its wheels. Have somebody push on the side of the car, shaking it side-to-side. Then crawl underneath as best you can; listen & look for stuff that rattles while its shaking.
