IMO best approach is to replace rack with a rebuilt unit, which are probably better than OEM. sobstory(site sponsor) has them for the lowest prices. The job is dirty but straightforward and can be done on a Saturday morning even the first time. Get a Bentley manual for step by step procedure. It explains teh sequence and how you have to turn the rack all the way to the side to drop the rack. Essential to have solid and tall jackstands so you have some room under the car. Helpful, but not essential to have 16 and 18mm stubby wrenches to loosen the fittings on the rack. Go to a diy car wash and pressure spray the whole area near the rack to reduce grease or use degreaser and a strong garden hose. You can rebuild the rack yourself, but I do not know if it can be easily done with the rack in the car and I do not know what special tools are needed to remove the inner tie rod. If your rack has any leakage at all from the spindle seal, definitely replace the rack. Also replace outer tierod ends if they have been on the car for awhile. Get car aligned after new rack is installed.
