I'm with the others - probably not the belt. The engine would stop running if the belt broke, and belts aren't oil related. If the engine was still running, then chances are good it wasn't super catastrophic - like a connecting rod coming through the side of the block.

Make sure the oil filler cap is on. If that falls off, you'll splash out oil. Next, make sure the breather hose on the valve cover to the intake hasn't fallen off. That's about the same as losing the cap.

The loud noise is worrysome. It could have been the sound of the oil filter hitting the muffler as it fell off. THAT would splash oil. But it could have been a pretty nasty bit, too.

I had this happen once on a Fiat (OK, stop laughing) - a motor mount broke, and the engine dropped a few inches. In Fiat's wonderful design, there was a suspension member with a bolt through it right under the pan. It dropped the pan onto the bolt, and there was a catastrophic oil loss.

The bad news is that if you're driving along at speed and lose that much oil that fast, there is a better than even chance that the engine was damaged by lack of oil. No matter what, drop the oil pan and have the bottom end (crankshaft bearings) checked for wear/damage.
