There are other ways...

The new Xenon sealed-beam lights are quite good. They are at least better than the stock '87+ lights. Also, you can of course buy the H4 sealed-beam replacements. Sure, they're designed for motorcycles and such, but they work just fine in cars, too. The Cibie ones are supposedly the best, but Hellas are more common. They only run $40-$50 per side, and are a MUCH cheaper alterative than genuine Saab e-codes. They don't look as good - which is why I never go that route. I've been told that the Cibie sealed-beam replacements are better than the Hella e-code lights by several people. I plan on using them in my 99T whenever that gets going... :)

All that said, I think the reason why "Saab headlights suck" is because the electrical system backing them up isn't that great. A thorough cleaning of the ground points and a new headlight relay make a world of difference on an old car even with the stock lights. A complete rewiring with the "external" headlight harness does wonders too. Except '87-'89 cars, which have such terrible lighting in the US I just can't think of how Saab sold them. '90+ cars are better, but not good by any stretch of the imagination. Is it any wonder ALL my Saabs (old 900s, new 900s, and 9000s) all have e-codes on them?
