hey alva,
no idea about the knocking because I just got my first saab. I'm in nyc (Brooklyn) also, and aparantly you need to go to roland, in brooklyn. I have however spoken to him on the phone and he will spend some time with you, and is very pleasant. On the other hand, after reading about some of the symptoms my car is having, I called him to get a price check on a HVC replacement. He told me it was around $120 for the part and, if I remember correctly, 85 for labor. it didnt sound too bad until I saw the OEM part at eeuroparts for $69, and an aftermarket one for $29. So I have to admit I havent been doing too much work with any mechanics because my last car was a toyota -just gas and oil etc. , but doubling parts prices seems steep. Maybe someone will shed some light on this and say if it is common practice to jack parts up by 100%. If so, then the labor cost seemed reasonable.
Anyway, he is listed here under "mechanics" in the grey box below...
