first, 3.7 down to 3.4 doesn't seem like a whole lot to me.

second, i saved something on this from a web page some time ago. hold on, i'll search a bit right now...ticktockticktock...

ok, dunno who this guy is, but it's from a rally website:

QUOTE--

Yes we have used "quickeners" in 900's w/PS. If your car is a '79-'93 I would recommend 2.0-1 ratio, the 1.5-1 works fine however the car will rotate easier with 2.0-1. The chain type seem to have a little more play than the gear type. I've heard comments as to the teeth on gear type being rather small and worries of the teeth breaking but have not as of yet seen it happen! Hope that helps.

(REPLY):

Richard is correct, the manual rack from the Saab 99 EMS is a quicker ratio than the 900 racks.
John Groo with the orange '83 900 Group 2 car in Hartford, CT runs with a steering quickener. He loves it.

so track down this john guy & ask him. maybe also post your question for "brad" on the performance board; he's raced saabs a bunch.

saab used gm saginaw racks, so if you can find someone with the knowhow, i can't imagine it'd be too terribly difficult to have one fabricated. be sure to use a rebuilt rack with stainless sleeves, or you're wasting your money on custom work.
