Rob,
The possibilities that I can think of are:
1) Wire to sending unit disconnected/cut/broken
2) Sending unit terminal corroded/dirty
3) Bad temp. guage (in dash)
4) Sending unit faulty (on engine)

Now, for the testing the above...

1&2) The temperature guage sending unit is located on the engine block just below the thermostat housing (below top radiator hose). The wire ends in a female spade lug terminal, which slips over a disc-shaped flat terminal on the sending unit. Check to see if the wire is disconnected or cut. If it is connected, unplug it and brighten up the contacts on both wire and sender with a stiff wire brush; reconnect.
3) The guage can be tested by finding the sending unit wire, unplugging it from sender, and grounding it (hold it against engine block or thermostat housing). Have someone in the car turn ignition to ON--no need to start motor--and observe temp guage. Needle should point to top of the scale if guage is functional and circuitry is good. If not, I'd check to see if any connector behind instrument panel is loose. Alternatively, I've read a 50-ohm resistor can be subsituted for above test, except needle should read halfway up scale.
4) I don't know the resistance specs (ohms) for a good 900 temp sender, but a good one should read different (higher) ohms when engine cold than when engine is warmed up. Just touch one probe of a multimeter to the sender's terminal and the other to ground (frame/engine valve cover/etc). Again, approximately 50 ohms, if memory serves me correctly, is the figure for normal temp resistance at the sender.
