Audio polarity oddity...(help)

Being as paranoid as I am (and being a car-audio rookie), I just double checked my Infinity 6x9 install I posted about a couple days ago, and although they sounded great, the polarity on one side was reversed (checked with volt-meter). After I corrected it, the bass decreased quite noticeably and I get distortion at volume levels where I didn't have any problem before I corrected it.

That prompted me to check the front speakers as well, which were both fine. So...

1. If the rear speakers are both connected properly, the sound in the rear sucks.
2. If the polarity on both of the rear speakers is reversed, sound sucks as above.
3. If the polarity is reversed on one of the rear speakers (doesn't matter which), sound is awesome, clear, rich, with no distortion within reasonable volume levels.

What the hell is going on here? Can I leave the polarity reversed on one speaker with no ill-effects or will it damage the head unit (no external amps here)? It really sounds perfect this way.

For the record, the setup consists of:
Alpine CDA-7892 (4x50W)
Kenwood KFC-1077 4" round 2-ways
Infinity Kappa 6x9 2-ways (new)
