I've got cold start problems with my 88 16v (no-turbo, 317k, love of my auto life) 900S. Won't start at temps < ~35 degr F (a problem here in Wisconsin this time of year!). Cranks and cranks with nary a fire; smells gassy (i.e., flooded). Local mechanic replaced coolant temp sensor-- no help, no refund. I replaced battery and starter-- it still won't start when solidly cold but I can crank on it longer before taking that LONG walk back into the house.

I have spark under non-starting conditions, fwiw, and the car runs great when it starts no matter what the temp.

I swapped out the AMM with a bone-yard version snagged from a '91 900 (94k)-- no help but not necessarily an informative result, as it could be bad itself or not compatable with my '88.

I've got my sights set on the AMM as culprit, but hesitate because of cost. A Bosch replacement lists for ~$700, refurbished AMMs available for about 1/2 that or less.

So here are my questions:

1. Is there a way to meter the existing AMM to determine if it is defective?

2. How useful/diagnostic would it be to rig the jumper/switch to look for error codes under non-starting conditions?

3. Are there other parts whose demise might cause similar symptoms? Any way I can test suspect parts to place blame (short of swapping them out for new parts)?

4. I've always believed that 'you get what you pay for' but shudder at the Bosch price for AMM relative to rebuilt and wonder if the premium is worth the price?

Any help/suggestions are welcome, if more info would be useful I'd be happy to provide and will post updates to Saabnet to keep the community informed.

Thanks in advance,

Scott
