Perhaps restoring a Saab is in and of itself the pitfall. You don't say what the car needs or if you're tring to repair rust, but by and large it's generally considered to be cheaper to simply buy a nice one then try to make a bad one nice. You can get some pretty nice, newer SPG's with 100k to 130k for $3,000 to $5,000. For $2,000 to $3,000 more you can find the occasional "cream puff" with 70 or 80K miles. You could spent a lot more than that restoring one, especially if you're having the work done professionally. And once you're done you'll never be able to sell it for anything close to what you have in it. If you have full coverage insurance on it, you'll only be able to get what an average '88 is worth (next to nothing), which means a "fender bender" will result in a "totaled" car. Saab 900s are going to be classics in the not too distant future, but it'll be several years before the value starts to reflect it.
