Along with the 86T engine I pulled for transplanting into my 82 chassis, I also snagged a 91 distributor from a 9000 (because it had the connecting plug I prefer). When I got the 86 engine to start in my 82 and drove it for the first few days, it felt as if something was holding the engine back. Mind you, I still had not timed the engine to spec. I did have a timing light, but couldn't get it to work, so I just did a guestimate based on past experience. Well, I eventually got the light to work and to my pleasant surprise, I had guestimated the timing to within 2 degrees (advanced) of spec. Then with the distributor removed to clean and polish the exterior, I discovered that the rotating advance disc within the distributor (that which connects to the vac advance unit on the body) was frozen in place. No doubt by the usual dried/gummy oil which can affect an aging disributor. After spraying the interior with solvent and lubricant, the disc rotates freely now and the performance improvement is noticable. That was the thing holding the engine back. Akin to a flat spot in the acceleration curve. That flat spot is gone!

Because I have a modified vac advance unit that can retard the timing a few additional degrees under boost, I've kept my timing 2 degrees advanced (until smog test time comes around). That seems to be the best setting for this engine for maximum stock performance. I've yet to detect any pre-ignition at all under any condition, and so the only thing keeping the boost below 10 psi is the 82 APC system. No doubt the wastegate setting as well. I'm hesitant to really test the limits of this engine as far as performance goes. The last thing I want is another dead engine to deal with anytime soon.
