It is two ways of getting clean transmission fluid in there.

The full service includes dropping the front and rear transmission pans, adjust one of the bands found inside, replace filter and clean out the magnet. Install new gaskets and put the oil pans back in place.
Than you check and adjust the band that is reachable from the out side of transmission.

After that, you loosen the fluid return line on the side of transmission and let it hang down in a bucket, fill the transmission with about 6 quarts of fluid and start the engine. The new fluid gets pick up by the pump and pushes the old fluid in converter and cooler out through the line that you opened. When it starts to sputter, you hook the cooler line back to the transmission and fill up with another 2 quarts of fluid.
Start the car and go through all the gears and after that check the fluid level.

That's the full service. Takes a couple of hours and cost is usually around $250-300 due to that the oil pan gaskets and filter is quite expensive.

The easier flush method on the other hand goes like this.

Disconnect the cooler line on side of transmission and hang it into a bucket, start the car and let the fluid pour out into the bucket. When it starts to sputter, shut of engine. Fill up with about 6 quarts of fluid, start the engine and let in flow into the bucket. When it starts to sputter again, turn of the engine. Hook the cooler line up to the transmission and fill up with 2 quarts of fluid.
Start the engine and go through all the gears, check the level.

Cost about $100.00

With the flush method you don't get to adjust the band inside or clean the magnet or get the pan gaskets and filter replaced.

In your case it "might" be that the inner band have started to wear and therefor cannot hold the second gear.

Do you feel a delay in shift from 1st to 2nd?

It's impossible to say if a low cost flush or a full blown transmission service would help in your case without test driving the car.

A third way that some cheap shops do the auto flush is to open the drain plug, let some 2-3 quarts of fluid drain out. Close plug and fill up, done.

Good luck

Anders
