I think youre probably right about the exhaust components being a little too boastfull when it comes to horsepower gains. a friend of mine put a fartcan on his 95 prelude and claimed that it gave him 25 extra horsepower, the exhaust was from the cat back. I reluctantly made him sad when i pointed out that the 25 hp gain is stated as "Up to 25 hp gain" they dont tell you that you need a turbocharger w/ IC, new manifolds, ported heads, new ECU and all the other jibjab.
I do know that as the laws of physics state (well I think anyway) that back pressure has to be just right so that the air is practically sucked from the engine as the piston is pushing the air from out of the cylinder. this can be acheived by making the diameter of the pipe greater the farther away from the source of the exhaust. I believe this is supposed to be done gradually, otherwise there is an eddy current effect within the pipe that slows down airflow. This seems kinda like common sense physics to me and if there is one thing college has taught me, its that if it seems right, it is most definatly wrong =o)
I think most of the exhaust garbage is hooey. Im not saying that it isnt a good thing, but its only part of the modification package.
Im driving my 86 SPG 212k & 18 psi (stock exhaust)
I would guess HP to be somthing like 170 to 180 at the wheels, based on the last v6 900s i drove (170 hp). my SPG is MUCH faster
