Did you do anything recently like remove the equalizer or do any work under the dash or has the equalizer died?

There is a multi-conductor cable with DIN connectors on the ends that runs between the back of the radio cage and the eqalizer cage. If the EQ is removed or is otherwise inorperable, there is a 4-or 6-pin cap that is usually held to the bottom end of the connector. Plug that cap into the end of the connector and it will complete the audio circuits. If the EQ appears to be working, you may need to remove it, pull out the cage and make sure that the DIN cable is plugged into the back of the cage.

You may also want to pull the radio and cage to make sure that it's plugged in at the upper end if none of the other checks help.

Then again, the radio output may have bagged it. After 18 years, cold solder joints do show up in these radios. I had 2 '88s with various radio problems.
