I have an 88 turbo 16V, and two (possibly) separate issues.

1. i've noticed the temp gauge running hot, especially in traffic for more than a half hour or so (nearly hit red the other day, in 65-70 degree weather), but also on the highway (running between half and two-thirds at 75mph in 50 degree weather the day after). i'm not sure i trust the gauge, though--the engine doesn't seem overly hot, and when i press the brake pedal the gauge will rise about 1/8, no matter where it is at the time. i reached behind there and the bolt is snug. i grounded the connector at the temp sender and, with car on, the gauge shot wildly up and down before coming to rest at the bottom. i think it should peg at the red, so, is this broken? any suggestions for getting it sorted out? it clearly isn't dead, just on the fritz.

2. in worrying about the car's temp, i noticed the driver's side fan never runs. i've shorted the thermostat and the passenger side fan runs fine, pulling air in the right way. i've jumpered/eliminated the time delay relay on the inner fender, according to Townsend, and still it doesn't run. maybe the fan's just bad, but any other suggestions for why it might not come on? is there a way to test the fan motor independently, by somehow jumping it?
