If half off includes cracking the cover loose from the block you have to go forward and replace the o-ring, the old one will have lost all its sealing ability from being compressed flat against the block over time. It will not be round in cross section, but the shape of the groove in the cover plus one totally flat side.
But if you haven't budged the cover at all, just removed bolts, you might be okay retightening.
I did the o-ring with the oil seal, per recommendations, but my take on it is it's darn unlikely to leak on its own. Undisturbed it would probably be good for the life of the car no matter how long. But it IS easier to remove and reinstall the crank seal with the cover off the car.
You're mostly there, probably ought to go forward and do it.
I found prying the cover off the dowel pins to be awkward - - one at 3 oclock and one at 9 oclock, as I recall. And if you haven't pulled your oil filter yet, I'd do that first so the oil in it won't keep seeping out and raining down on you as you pull the cover.
