When it comes to the AC i'm a big cheapskate. I experimented on a few different cars for an a "good enough" solution. In my opinion the minimum is as follows:

- new reciever/dryer for ~$20
- new o-rings and r-134a valves ~$20
- 3 cans of r-134a with oil ~$20

Install the new reciever dryer and change the o-rings. The only problem here is that often the crappy steel-on-aluminum fittings at the condenser will be screwed up by corrosion. If you really cannot get them apart with a reasonable amount of effert leave these connections alone and cross your fingers that they don't leak. The alternative is that you use more force and shear off the threads on the condensor and mangle the aluminum lines. Needless to say, this damage adds considerably to the cost of your conversion.

If you are lazy like me you also really only need to install the one suction side r-134a valve at the compressor since you will likely only be filling from the low-pressure port anyway (install both if you plan to take it to an actual AC shop for a vacuum and refill).

Once everything is sealed up (you hope!), take your bottles of r-134a and feed them in. You should have cool air. Maybe not ice-cold but certainly sufficient to combat 30+ degree heat on the road. Although you may well have slow leaks you can just top it up every year before the hot season. Heck, top it off twice a year since a can of r134a is only $5!

In the past i have cleaned the system out with mineral spirits and maybe got better performance. However, unless you have some time and patience you will have difficulty getting every last bit of the mineral oil out of the system (particularly the condensor). It also means having to open up those condensor connections which may be permantly corroded together. Vacuuming the system is also probably a good idea however I have never vacuumed my systems simply because the AC shops around where i live all seem to want to charge me $100 to do the job. If you can borrow a vacuum pump them have at it by all means.
