The transmission swap is probably eight hours of work for someone who knows what they're doing... at a shop, that's $800, for a nice guy with a couple beers, $400 seems on spot. IMHO, there is also HUGE advantage in having the guy who rebuilt the box install it. That way, if there turns out to be something wrong with the rebuild, he knows about it firsthand. I would not hesitate to make the trip.

As for other engine-related stuff during a transmission swap, it's absolutely advisable. I'm pretty good, but it's still six or eight hours for me to a head gasket by itself; with the engine out of the car, it's an hour, tops. Half the work in that task is removing wiring harnesses and draining fluids and getting stuff out of the way - with the engine out of the car, it's already done. I always do the head gasket when I'm pulling the engine - it's oh-so-worth-it. Same goes for the timing chain, front & rear seal, oil pump o-ring, oil pump pickup tube o-ring. That stuff is no brainer with the engine out... and in when it comes to this stuff, the rear seal is a $5 part that takes an hour of labor to install. With the engine out, it's a ten minute job.

I'll throw this out - probably end up wrong, but whatever... If you've got $2k into the transmission & labor, budget another ~$200 for parts, and another six to eight hours or labor, and $100 in machine shop time, and I suspect you'll have EVERYTHING you need. I suspect if you run with Claude, he won't care too much if you buy everything from eeuroparts (et al) and just pay him for the work. Just be sure you clear the plan with him, so there are no surprises...
