well another sort of productive day in saab land. since i bought my 89 turbo a little over a month ago, i've been slowly getting it up to speed and learning a lot in the process. it was a gamble from the start, had sat for two years and i wasn't able to drive it before i bought it. but, it's low miles (94,000) and great body prompted me to take a gamble (that and the fact that it has records of a new transmission installed 4,000 miles ago).

so far: new ecu, distributor cap, rotor, plugs, oil change, gear box oil change, lots of fiddling with the shift linkage.

it was slipping out of third and reverse, but i refused to admit that it was a tranny problem. new gear oil seemed to work for a bit, but the problem came back. shift linkage fiddling did nothing. yesterday, i finally replaced the motor mounts (not fun) and i'm happy to say that that seems to have done the trick. put her through her paces, accelerating up hills in third, and not a hint of slipping out. the front mount was totally disintegrated. all of you with gear slipping problems: CHECK THOSE ENGINE MOUNTS!

going to try the reverse fix trick tomorrow. it's better with the new mounts but not perfect.

next up is non-functioning tail lights. townsend ground fix only partly did the trick, so i'm just going to replace the circuit boards. then on to replacing all the vacuum hoses, o2 sensor, and general fiddling around to optimize performance and boost. then new tires, maybe new rims, headliner, new dash, new dash bulbs while i'm at it, i'm sure there's lots of other things i'm forgetting. oh yeah, found out it has an alarm today - the hard way. that was interesting.

after all that, on to the body. it's in good shape aside from two dings in the passenger door. take care of those, polish her up, replace front air dam or maybe even try to spg-ize her. yes it's a four-door, but i love four door 900's, and i've seen a notch back with spg panels. i think it would look pretty cool to rig something up. and don't tell me that four-doors can't be sporty! three-doors are nice, but i passed up a lot of them for the rarer and, in my opinion, more aesthetically pleasing four-door. not sure about a boot spoiler. anyone ever seen one on a sedan? how do they look?

sorry about the rambling message, but i was just thinking today about how i've never been a car person. i've never really cared about my cars that much. just wanted them to get me from point a to point b. before saabs got a hold of me, i had never picked up a wrench, and today i found myself under the hood for hours while it was raining and blowing like crazy. it's pretty amazing what these cars can do to you. thanks for all the advice! i'm still learning, but soon i'm sure i'll be able to return the favor to new initiates into the saab cult.
