Easiest way to troubleshoot it is to replace the distributor with a known good one. One other problem is often the plug/socket on the distributor...it breaks down over time; dirty engines don't help the plastic either.
However, I would look at the ignition switch itself or the ignition amplifier for heat-related problems. Generally, once fuel is running enough to start the engine they don't cut out at idle. However, it is also possible the fuel pump is so worn out or intermittent that it is indeed running out of fuel.
How do you KNOW the fuel is cutting out? Do you have a fuel pressure gauge or have you wired an LED into the fuel pump wiring system to detect whether the fuel pump is running? Can you hear the fuel pump running?
