This does sound like the shift coupler tearing the rubber part off symptom, but it's not a certainty either. If you get a good flashlight, open the hood, cold engine best for your comfort, have a friend in the drivers seat, and have key in the ignition to allow shifter movement but engine OFF, lean over the engine from the passenger side look down between the engine and the firewall where you can see the fan belts, and then look past them to see the steering rack, big ugly may be filthy too runs from side to side down there, have your friend clutch pushed to the floor, and move the shifter between 3rd and 4th back and forth until you see that moving item. once you have located it, have friend shift 1st to 2nd. you will see the shave move to and away from the engine, THEN have friend shift from 2nd to 4th, a U shape manuver, had then continue this and watch the shift coupler, it's the rectangular piece of metal that looks like a bow tie on a very skinny neck (maybe), watch as the shift is done from 2nd to 4th and two things should be happening, the shift coupler is a sandwich of two pieces of metal with a rubber piece in the middle (somewhat like motor mounts on some cars), the two pieces of metal are attached, one to the shifter, and the other to the shift shaft on the transmission, when the rubber layer tears... the extreme rotation of going to 5th/Reverse often does not get transmitted properly, the part on the shifter side rotates and the sandwich opens up and the part on the transmission side DOES NOT ROTATE as much as the shifter side does... Follow all that Jazz? basically you are looking to see that both sides rotate the same. Then have friend move 1st to 5th and keep doing that, nice gentle and slow, and see if you can note if the shifter coupler is working as a unit or opening up... You can do a field fix with about 5 large zip ties, you can fix it with two metal hose clamps forever, or you can purchase the part and replace it. Do a search on http://www.eEuroparts.com and if they have it you will find it and a picture! in the manual transmission section. the product changed in about 1991 from round to the rectangular one on you 1993.
