Exact replacement, straight bolt up. The vacuum advance mod adjusts the onset and maximum retard settings of capsule; it is used to compensate for advancing the timing. Do a search under vacuum advance mod on the performance board. When you advance the timing from 16 btdc to 20-22 btdc to improve your off boost performance, you need to adjust the retard stop of the capsule as well or your boost performance will suffer - the addition of a spring is also very helpful to smooth out the retardation curve. the stock spring in the capsule tends to dump all of the retardation at about 4-7 psi, creating a flat spot. By adjusting the stop, adding a spring, and advancing the timing to about 20 btdc, the engine is much more peppy and responsive.

There are a lot of very valuable mods that can be performed on these cars for essentially zero dollars and a bit of bench-top engineering. Here's a link to my home-made capsule mod, that incorporates the pioneering of several others too numerous to mention. You can also buy a fully modified capsule from Brad at Kansas City Saab or from Dave (look for his posts under "900aero".
