As Earthbrown says, the CEL is only from the Fuel Injection system, so it would not react to an oil problem. However, you're getting third-hand information from someone that has a demonstrated lack of knowledge about the car. My rule of thumb is to assume that any information provided without documentation by the previous owner is of no value. It might be right, it might be wrong, it might be a baldfaced lie. The light seen might have been the Oil Pressure light, which would be associated with the oil system, and not in a good way.

The bad news here is that there is a good chance the engine is not in great shape. "Didn't maintain the car well" isn't a good omen. The safest thing to do is assume the oil dates back to the 90's and the coolant is original, as is the tranny oil. If the engine is out, I'd flush everything, and drop the pan and check the bottom bearings. No use going through the work to install an engine to find out the bottom end is shot. If the tranny is on, you can use the starter motor to do a compression test - again, if the rings are shot or the cylinders scored, now is the time to address the issue.
