I have a 1989 c900 convertible. I've had it for 3 years, I put about 2000 miles a year on it in the summer. It's now due for an oil change, and I seek some advice.

The motor has an issue with low oil pressure at idle. I have an oil pressure and temp gauge on the car.

I'm currently using Valvoline DuraBlend 20w50 in it, semi-syn. When the oil gets hot, say 180-200 degrees, I will get low oil pressure at idle, on the order of 5 psi or so. The warning light will come on at idle, but the gauge is still registering pressure. At 2000 rpm (same temp) I will get 40 psi or so.

The question is -- do I keep spending the $4/quart for the thick DuraBlend? I was terribly tempted at the local NAPA store by some plain old 20w50 dino oil.

Or, on the assumption that dino oil is thicker than synthetic at the same weight, can I drop down to 10w40 dino oil and keep my pressures?

I have a preference for synthetic oil in turbocharged motors, obviously, but given the light duty and low annual mileage for the car I wonder if I'm better off economically with non-synthetic. (And light duty maybe a misnomer, the car does stop and go city driving in the summer, which obviously drives up the oil temp).

Thanks in advance for the advice.
