I suggest taking to a competent machinist, and try to find one that does Saabs too. There are specific setups for doing the compression test, or find the guys that have the newer more expensive machines that adapt very well to most everything. The better guys will specialize in this and you will see everyone from all the brands goint there. Sometimes you get to learn some fun useless facts too (Ford dealer mech brought in a head earlier and was there to pick it up one that was ready, there were about five more same there for work, something about the valve seats coming out and what an issues that was...) You know you have a pro if you see that.

The machinist will *tell* you if it needs a valve job, or just a resurface OR NOT, and can put the valve seals in. He can also tell you of any issues with the head, and of course he can "hot tank" the head and clean all the gunk off it too. I've seen posts about "it didn't need the machine work" and "I just replaced the head gasket" and my reccomendation is to take it to a machinist *always* to have it checked out. For starters I'm not replacing the valve seals myself, have seen it done, don't want to get the machine that checks your valves for being straight, or the stuff to test for valve leakage, and I don't have the vision to eyeball a head and say it's straight.

AND if you had the unfortunate experience of breaking a stud off (or finding one or more had been lurking there for a time?) this is also the guy to take care of that.

This is also the same guy that can resurface your flywheel when it's clutch time.
