Well I was looking for an automatic shifter box so I could post a picture but I can't find one right now. Anyway, there is a screw, 27 torx as I recall, on the bottom left side of the shifter box that clamps the cable. You'll have to pull back the carpeting to get access to it. You put the trans in neutral and then loosen that screw. Then gently move the shift lever forward and backward a bit to be certain that it's in the middle of the neutral notch and then you lock the cable down again. The principle is that since there is a detent mechanism at both ends of the cable they must be precisely synchronized. The manual valve inside the transmission has a sort of feeble detent but it is the critical one. There is a more positive detent mechanism at the shift lever and if the two are not synchronized the shift lever detent will over-ride the gearbox detent and you will drive around with the manual valve positioned between 1st and second or second and third gears but you won't drive around for long before you are walking. The unit will hunt rapidly between the two gears and very quickly the teeth will fly off the planetary pinions. Don't drive the car until this is properly accomplished. Maybe the Bently manual illustrates the procedure if you have one.
